The objectives of this research were to study the utilization of dictation exercises for English
writing skills development of students to approach the university criteria, and to study the satisfaction
towards studying English of students after using dictation exercises.
The sample for this research consisted of 40 students who took ENG 122 (English II). The
instruments used were (1) Lesson plans, (2) English writing skills test, (3) Six dictation exercises, and
(4) Students’ satisfaction questionnaires towards studying English. The statistics used to analyze the data
were: mean ( x ), standard deviation (S.D.), and t-test for dependent samples and t-test one sample.
The research results indicated that (1) English writing skills after the training to learn by using the
dictation exercises were higher than before learning. It was the statistically significant higher at .05 level.
(2) English writing skills of students after the training the dictation higher than the 60 percent that were
statistically significant at .05 level. When considering the sets, English writing skills of students met the
criteria above and higher than the criteria. Except the second set was a writing difficult words and the fifth
set was a writing sentences were lower than the 60 percent that were statistically significant at .05 level.
And (3) the students’ satisfaction of dictation exercises was very high level.
