The purpose of this research was to study the effects using exercises on English conversation
for communication to develop English speaking ability of students who enrolled in the ENG 111:
Everyday English Course in the second semester of the 2012 academic year at Sripatum University.
The research sample consisted of 30 Sripatum University students in one intact class, who
enrolled in the ENG 111: Everyday English Course in the second semester of the 2012 academic year,
obtained by cluster sampling. The research instruments comprised a set of exercises on English
conversation for communication and a speaking behavior observation form. Statistics for data
analysis were the percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test.
Research findings showed that the overall pre-experiment speaking ability of the student in
the experimental group was at the good level, with the overall observation rating mean of 3.86.
However, only 13.3 percent of students in the group had English speaking ability at the good level.
After the experiment, it was found that 93.3 percent of students in the group could speak English at
the very good level.
Comparison results of English speaking abilities of the students before and after the
experiment showed that their post-experiment English speaking ability increased over their preexperiment ability at the .05 level of statistical significance.
